MLO 4: Research and Technology
Outcomes:
4.1. Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.
4.2. Students use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3. Students collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Courses Taken:
JAPN 400 Advanced Japanese for Interpersonal Communication
JAPN 404 Advanced Japanese for Presentational Communication
WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone
Reflective Narrative:
4.1. The three classes that helped me to fulfill this MLO were JAPN 400, 404, and WLC 400. In JAPN 400 which I took during the Fall semester of my final year, we learned how to effectively conduct research on a certain topic. We attended library sessions and gained information on useful search engines, and how to apply them to our studies. I was able to use engines such as EBSCO Host and WorldCat in order to research the topic I chose for my capstone project, which was “Self-Esteem among University Students”. With the research methods we learned in this class, I was able to find an array of information related to my topic.
4.2. JAPN 404 was the class that focused most on our Japanese language and culture skills. This was the Japanese-specific course for Capstone, and we spent the class developing our theses and learning how to present our ideas in Japanese. We also spent every week learning written and presentational Japanese on a scholarly level. As the topic of my capstone was a comparison of America and Japan’s self-esteem, I used research methods in order to find information on the Japanese view of self-esteem. Thus, I found many sources that explained the Japanese perspective of self-esteem, and how it is rooted in Japanese culture.
4.3. In WLC 400, we used many technology-based resources in order to complete our capstone projects. For example, we used Google Forms to create our surveys, and sent them out through social-networking sites or e-mail. After the data was collected, we then analyzed our results and created a PowerPoint which we would use to present our research and findings. Furthermore, we learned to utilize Excel for making charts and graphs to put on our PowerPoints in order to display our results. Lastly, we used Word to write our final papers in both Japanese and English, and learned how to properly format it in order to create an academic paper.
Each of these courses assisted me in completing my capstone project, and I believe the skills I gained through each course will benefit me in the future. To view the work I did in these courses, please visit my Capstone Project page.
