JAPN400: Introduction to Advanced Interpersonal Communication (Fall 2013)
Course Description:
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in interpersonal communication through the formulation of research questions and conducting research utilizing appropriate technologies. Taught in Japanese.
Reflective Narrative:
This course was an introductory course to prepare us for our capstone project, which is the graduation thesis all CSUMB students are required to complete. In this “Pre-Capstone” class, we chose the topic we would work on for our year-long project. This course focused mostly on the research aspect of our capstone, as we collected resources related to our topics. We learned how to effectively use search engines and academic resources for our research, thus helping me to fulfill MLO 4: Research and Technology.
The topic I chose for my capstone is “Self-Esteem among University Students”. I decided to do a comparative study of self-esteem among Japanese and American university students, and to my surprise, there were many previous studies on this topic. I was able to find an array of information by utilizing academic search engines such as EBSCO Host and WorldCat.
This course also helped me to develop my critical thinking skills by challenging me to analyze academic material and create research questions based on the topic. Furthermore, we created survey questions that I would later distribute to university students in order to collect data that would support my thesis. For this, we learned how to use Google Forms for creating surveys, which supports the fulfillment of the technology aspect of MLO 4.
The part I enjoyed the most of this course was being able to read academic journals in Japanese. This increased my interest in being able to comprehend advanced Japanese readings, and I hope to expand my ability to do so in the future.
